Cost

How much does it cost to ship a car?

It depends on the distance, the vehicle's size and whether it runs, open or enclosed transport, the season and how soon you need it. Open transport is the economical standard; enclosed usually adds 30–50%. Velocity gives every move one written, all-in quote by email, typically within minutes during business hours, and current price ranges for routes out of Indianapolis are on the car shipping cost index.

Is the quote free, and when do I pay?

The quote is free and nothing is due to ask for one. You pay nothing until you have read and signed the transport agreement. Then you pay a deposit by credit card or ACH through Velocity's online portal, and the agreement spells out when the balance is due, which can vary by load.

Are there hidden fees?

No. Your written quote is all-in, and that is the number for the move as quoted. If the details change, such as a different address or a car that no longer runs, tell dispatch so the quote can be updated before pickup.

How can I make car shipping cheaper?

Choose open transport unless the car needs enclosed, give a flexible pickup window, book early (two to four weeks ahead in snowbird season), and tell dispatch up front whether the car runs. Shorter, busy routes such as Indianapolis to Texas usually cost less per mile than remote rural addresses.

Timing

How long does it take to ship a car?

Once the car is loaded, routes out of Indianapolis typically take same day to 1 day to Chicago, 1–2 days to Dallas, New York or Charlotte, about 2 days to Houston, and 3–4 days to Phoenix. Longer cross-country runs take a few days more, and dispatch gives you a clear timeline with your quote.

How far ahead should I book car shipping?

One to two weeks ahead is usually enough. For snowbird moves, book two to four weeks ahead: late October through mid December is the busiest stretch south, and March and April north. If you need it sooner, ask for expedited or priority transport.

How soon can my car be picked up?

Dispatch confirms a pickup window when you book, usually within a day or two. Velocity trucks run Indiana to Texas every week, so pickups on that route are often quick. Expedited and priority options are available when timing is tight.

Pickup and delivery

Is car shipping door to door?

Yes. The truck comes to your home, dealership, auction yard or business and delivers to the address you choose, including gated and 55+ communities. If a street can't take a large truck, the driver arranges a nearby meeting spot with you.

Do I need to be there at pickup and delivery?

You or someone you trust, such as a friend, family member or dealership contact, needs to be at both ends to hand over or receive the keys, walk around the car with the driver and sign the bill of lading.

How do I prepare my car for shipping?

Wash it so the pickup photos show its true condition, take out personal items and loose things like covers and toll tags, leave about a quarter tank of fuel, and tell the driver about any alarm, leaks or aftermarket parts.

Can you ship a car that doesn't run?

Yes. Tell us in the quote form if it doesn't run, roll or steer, or has no keys. Dispatch plans loading and unloading before the truck goes out, and the equipment includes hydraulic liftgate trailers. A non-running vehicle costs more to load than one that drives on.

Safety and trust

Is my car insured while it's being shipped?

Yes. Velocity Logistics is a licensed and insured motor carrier (USDOT 4494211, MC 1777008) with insurance on file at the FMCSA, and every partner carrier it uses is checked for active authority and cargo insurance. The car's condition is photographed at pickup and delivery and recorded on a digital bill of lading.

How do I check that a car shipping company is legitimate?

Look the company up by its USDOT number on the FMCSA's public SAFER website and check that its authority is active and insurance is on file. Ask who will physically haul your car, and get the price in writing before paying a deposit. Velocity Logistics is USDOT 4494211, MC 1777008.

What's the difference between an auto transport carrier and a broker?

A motor carrier owns the trucks and employs the drivers who haul the car. A broker arranges the move with a carrier. Velocity Logistics is a licensed motor carrier: its trucks and drivers haul cars nationwide. When its schedule can't cover a date, and for most motorcycles and powersports, Velocity books a vetted, insured carrier through a licensed broker partner, tells the customer before pickup, and stays the single point of contact.

Who will actually haul my car?

Usually a Velocity truck and driver. The car rides on a Velocity truck whenever the schedule allows. If a vetted partner carrier hauls it instead, dispatch tells you before pickup, so you always know who has your car.

What happens if my car is damaged?

Note any new damage on the bill of lading at delivery, before you sign, and take photos. Then call dispatch. The photo inspection at pickup and the delivery record are what any damage is checked against, which is why both are done on every move.

Vehicles and services

Should I choose open or enclosed car transport?

Open transport carries cars on an open multi-car trailer and is the economical standard for everyday vehicles. Enclosed transport uses a hard-sided trailer that shields the car from weather and road debris, the usual choice for luxury, classic, exotic and low-clearance cars. Enclosed typically costs 30–50% more.

What trucks does Velocity Logistics use?

Ford Super Duty pickup trucks with 3 to 5 car open trailers and 1 to 3 car enclosed trailers. Volvo and Peterbilt semis with 7 to 9 car open and enclosed trailers.

Do you pick up cars from Copart, IAA and Manheim?

Yes, every day, along with dealer lots. Send the gate pass or release and the lot or stock number with your quote request. Book as soon as the sale is paid, before the yard's storage fees start. Velocity is independent and not affiliated with any auction.

Can you ship a car I bought online or out of state?

Yes. Velocity picks up from the seller or dealer anywhere in the lower 48 and delivers to your door. Arrange the pickup time with the seller, and make sure they know a driver will inspect and photograph the car before loading.

Do you ship motorcycles and powersports?

Yes: motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs and side-by-sides, dirt bikes and scooters. Most bikes go with partner carriers and some ride on Velocity trucks; either way Velocity is your single point of contact.
